Congregational Greeting and Theme of the Day:

“Finances in Days Gone By”

Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:.
Gracious Lord, help us to see that your mercy is the greatest wealth we can ever receive.  Feed us with your grace, and grant us the treasure that comes only through your Son who is our Savior – Jesus Christ.  Amen.

FIRST READING:

Leviticus 25:10b, 23, 35-38a

10bIt shall be a jubilee for you; each one of you is to return to his family property and each to his own clan.  23"'The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.  35"'If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you.  36Do not take interest of any kind from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you.  37You must not lend him money at interest or sell him food at a profit.  38I am the LORD your God.

Psalm 15

1 A psalm of David. LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill?
2  He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart
3  and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman,
4  who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts,
5  who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.

Second Lesson:
 1 Timothy 6: 9-10

9People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.  10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 6th Chapter

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  Matthew 6:19-21,24
19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 24"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

UPCOMING SERMON SERIES
This month, Pastor will give a series of sermons entitled “Faith and Finances”.  This series is the result of a suggestion from one of our members.  So do you have any suggestions for Pastor Mark?  Are there any subjects you would like to see turned into a Sermon Series?  Do you have any questions or concerns that you would like to see PM develop into a Sermon Series for this fall?  If you do then tell Pastor or call the church office.

In our continuing efforts to “Go Green” and save money too, we would appreciate you using one communion card per family.  Simply note the names on that card of the people who took communion.

Thank you kindly.

The SWAT members meet every 2 months for approximately 1/2 hour after a Saturday service. Working with the team does not require much of your time and it's easy! Each person takes a turn "ushering" a service and always with another team member. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Mark.

There are about 200 giving units in our church and if each unit gave an extra $10 each month at the end of the year we would have an additional $24,000.  Please consider a slight increase in your commitment to the ministry here at St. John and help solve our financial problem.
