WE GATHER TO WORSHIP P=Presiding, A=Assisting, C=Congregation
Prelude...............................................................................................................Jan Evans
Congregational Greeting & Theme of the Day:
“Be Opened”
ENTRANCE HYMN: (stand, if you are able)
“O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”
O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.
O beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law.
O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness, and every gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream that sees, beyond the years,
Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.
GREETING:
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.
KYRIE: WOV Page 28
P: Kyrie eleison;
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: Christe eleison:
C: Christ, have mercy.
P: Kyrie eleison:
C: Lord, have mercy.
HYMN OF PRAISE: WOV Page 29
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father,
We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
PRAYER OF THE DAY:………………………………………………………… WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: Hear us when we call to you, O God. For if we cannot turn to you, where can hope be found? Sharpen us to hear when you call, especially in the voice of a vulnerable one. For if others cannot turn to us, where will faith be found and lived? Amen.
THE WORD OF GOD: First Lesson: Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23
1A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. 2Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all. 8He who sows wickedness reaps trouble, and the rod of his fury will be destroyed. 9A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor. 22Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, 23for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who plunder them.
Psalm 125
1 Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures
forever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both
now and forevermore.
3 The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then
the righteous might use their hands to do evil.
4 Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart.
5 But those who turn to crooked ways the LORD will banish with the evildoers. Peace
be upon Israel.
Second Lesson: James 2:1-10
1My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. 2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong? 8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand): WOV No. 613
C:
Celtic Alleluia
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning in the 7th Chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
Gospel Lesson: Mark 7:31-37
31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man. 33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!"). 35At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."
P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON:........................................”Be Opened” .............................Pastor Mark Evans

He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
