PRAISE HYMN:                         I’ve Got Peace Like a River

I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river,
I’ve got peace like a river, in my soul, in my soul.
I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got peace like a river,

I’ve got joy like a fountain, I’ve got joy like a fountain,
I’ve got joy like a fountain, in my soul, in my soul.

BAPTISM (2):  (No photographs, please, until after worship.  The service of Baptism is an opportunity for all of us to remember our Baptisms.)
P:   Dear Parents and Sponsors, you have brought Kayla Elizabeth Paul  to this place because God wants her to be washed and cleansed.  Through sin, we live in a broken world, but in baptism, by water and the spirit, we are reborn children of God and made members of Christ’s Body.

S:   We present Kayla to be washed in God’s Baptismal water.

P:   As parents and sponsors, you are now asked to see that this child grows up in the Christian Faith.  That she learns the stories of our Faith.  See to it that through your lives she understands the meaning of the Creeds, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. Make sure that she experiences the love of Christ through your love, for it is Christ’s love which shall sustain her throughout her life.  Will you keep these promises?
Parents & Sponsors:   We will.

P:   Together, with this Congregation of Believers, will you affirm your faith and the Faith into which Kayla is baptized?

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH:  (congregation together)
God is love, and in God is the source of all goodness and truth.  God is the creator of the universe and continues to recreate with us a kingdom of compassion for all humankind.  Jesus is God’s Son.  Jesus was born of Mary, lived a life of kindness and concern, died a cruel death on an executioner’s cross, and was raised on the third day to a new life.  Jesus’ life is our life.  We can now live a life of kindness and concern; we can die and be raised to new life; we can live as forgiven sinners, confident of our place in eternity.  We can respond to the call of Christ to follow him.
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God, alive and at work, establishing and building the realm of God on this earth.  The Spirit of God leads us into the true faith, guides us through the difficult choices of life, and comforts us when we feel as if we cannot go on.  God is with us, living inside of us, through the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

THE BAPTISM:  Kayla Elizabeth Pauly, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Amen

BAPTISMAL PRAYER

P:   Kayla Elizabeth Pauly, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the Cross of Christ forever.

A:   Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

CONGREGATIONAL WELCOME:    We welcome you into the Lord’s family.  We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, and worker with us in the kingdom of God.

 Today we welcome Kayla Elizabeth Pauly into our family of Christ.  Kayla is the daughter of Andrew and Kristi (Trambley) Pauly of Royal Oak.  Kayla’s sponsors are Kenneth and Kelly Trambley.

THE WORD OF GOD

FIRST LESSON:  Proverbs 1:20-33
20Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; 21at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech: 22"How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?  23If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you.  24But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, 25since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, 26I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--27when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.  28"Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.  29Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, 30since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, 31they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.  32For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."

Psalm 19
1      The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his
        hands.
2      Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.
3      There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
4      Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the
heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
5      which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion
        rejoicing to run his course.
6      It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing
        is hidden from its heat.
7      The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are
        trustworthy, making wise the simple.
8      The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of
the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
9      The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD
        are sure and altogether righteous.
10     They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter
than honey, than honey from the comb.
11     By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
12     Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults.
13     Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will
I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.
14     May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in
your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

SECOND LESSON:  James 3:1-12
1Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.  2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.  3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.  4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.  5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.  7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness.  10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.  11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?  12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able): WOV No. 612

C: Celtic Alleluia
                                       Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!
    Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 8th Chapter

C: Glory to you, O Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  Mark 8:27-28
27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?"  28They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets."

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:                              “Jesus, Who Are You?”                      Pastor Mark Evans

OFFERING/OFFERTORY (stand and sing): WOV Page 35

C:   Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing.
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the  bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers  we offer now. Grace our table with your presence, Lord, and give us a  foretaste of the feast to come.

A: Let us pray. Merciful God
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--
ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.
Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ
 our Lord.  Amen.

logon to the website to see the prayer listing.

After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together,

“We Come to You for Healing, Lord”

We come to you for healing, Lord --- of body, mind and soul, And pray that by your Spirit’s touch --- our lives may be made whole.

You touch us through physicians’ skills, through nurses’ gifts of care --- And through the love of faithful friends who lift our lives in prayer.

THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34
A: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs.

Each portion of the prayers concludes with these words:
A: Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with these words:
P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen

THE ORDER OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS:
P: Gracious God,
C: Our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name; what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

PARDON:
P:         Jesus Christ our Savior gave himself for us, redeeming us from all sin and cleansing       us to be people who are eager to do what is good. Through the water of rebirth and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, God saves us, renews us in grace and bestows on us eternal life.
C: Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING: WOV Page 36
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places
offer thanks . . . (Here the minister continues with the proper preface, concluding:) we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Congregation sings
C: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna.  Hosanna.  Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest.

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;  broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Take and eat; this is my body, given for  you.   Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:  This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this for the remembrance of me.

THE LORD’S PRAYER:   (stand if you are able)
P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
C: Our Father, who art in heaven,  hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,  thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
 Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
 forever and ever. Amen.

JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE
There are about 200 giving units in our church and if each unit gave an extra $10 each month at the end of the year we would have an additional $24,000.  Please consider a slight increase in your commitment to the ministry here at St. John and help solve our financial problem.

The Sharing Tree in July?
Yes, the Sharing Tree is up!  This is to help us “stock the church” for MCREST.  Some tags are for food items, some for the Health Care kits that each guest receives from us, and some are for Birthday gifts and Bingo prizes.  The white envelopes are for donations for perishable items.  Please consider taking a tag or two.  We ask that you place items under the tree by August 23rd.  Please place the envelope in the collection basket by August 23rd.  Thank you!
