PRAISE RINGERS:..................Meditation on “Beautiful Savior”......Arr. by Cathy Moklebust

Congregational Greeting & Theme of the Day:
“Small Acts Can Make a Big Splash”

ENTRANCE HYMN: (stand, if you are able)    “We Are the Church”

(Chorus)  I am the church!  You are the church!   We are the church together!
All who follow Jesus all around the world!  Yes, we’re the church together!

The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple,
The church is not a resting place, the church is a people!  (Chorus)

We’re many kinds of people, with many kinds of faces,
All colors and all ages, too, from all times and places.  (Chorus)

And when the people gather there’s singing and there’s praying,
There’s laughing and there’s crying sometimes, all of it saying:  (Chorus)

I count if I am ninety or nine or just a baby;
There’s one thing I am sure about and I don’t mean maybe;  (Chorus)

GREETING:
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
 and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.

KYRIE: WOV Page 28
P:  Kyrie eleison;
C: Lord, have mercy.
P: Christe eleison:
C: Christ, have mercy.
P: Kyrie eleison:
C: Lord, have mercy.

HYMN OF PRAISE: WOV Page 29
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father,
We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
Glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY:…………………………………………………………  WOV Page 30
P:   The Lord be with you.
C:   And also with you.
P:   Let us pray…
C: Lord, we’ve been told over and over again that bigger is better:  that the only thing that matters is the big event, the big game, the big deal.  Lord help us to see that it’s in the everyday, seemingly small and mundane actions of our lives that we truly live out your command to love our neighbor.  Inspire us to do small acts of kindness that will help to transform our community.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
PRAISE SINGERS: ........................... “Let Us Love”...............................by Mary McDonald

CHILDREN’S SERMON..........................................................................Pastor Mark Evans

PRAISE HYMN:
Grace Alone

Every promise we can make, every prayer and step of faith,
Every difference we will make is only by His grace.
Every mountain we will climb, every ray of hope we shine,
Every blessing left behind is only by His grace.

Chorus
Grace alone which God supplies, strength unknown He will provide.
Christ in us, our cornerstone, we will go forth in grace alone.

Every soul we long to reach, every heart we hope to teach,
Everywhere we share His peace is only by His grace.
Every loving word we say, every tear we wipe away,
Every sorrow turned to praise is only by His grace.

Chorus
Grace alone which God supplies, strength unknown He will provide.
Christ in us, our cornerstone, we will go forth in grace alone.

THE WORD OF GOD:  First Lesson:  Job1:1, 2:1-10
1In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.  2:1On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him.  2And the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."  3Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason."  4"Skin for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life.  5But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face."  6The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life."  7So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.  8Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.  9His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!"  10He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

Psalm 26
1    Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the LORD
      without wavering.
2    Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;
3    for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth.
4    I do not sit with deceitful men, nor do I consort with hypocrites;
5    I abhor the assembly of evildoers and refuse to sit with the wicked.
6    I wash my hands in innocence, and go about your altar, O LORD,
7    proclaiming aloud your praise and telling of all your wonderful deeds.
8    I love the house where you live, O LORD, the place where your glory dwells.
9    Do not take away my soul along with sinners, my life with bloodthirsty men,
10   in whose hands are wicked schemes, whose right hands are full of bribes.
11   But I lead a blameless life; redeem me and be merciful to me.
12   My feet stand on level ground; in the great assembly I will praise the LORD.

Second Lesson:  Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12
1In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.  3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.  4So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.  5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.  6But there is a place where someone has testified: "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?  7You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor 8and put everything under his feet." In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.  9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.  10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.  11Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.  12He says, "I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises."

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand): WOV No. 613
C:
Celtic Alleluia

                                            Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

         Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning in the 21st Chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

Gospel Lesson:  Luke 21:1-14
1As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.  2He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.  3"I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others.  4All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:..................”Small Acts Can Make a Big Splash” .............Pastor Mark Evans

APOSTLES' CREED (stand, if you are able): WOV Page 33
C:  I believe in God, the Father almighty,
   Creator of heaven and earth.
  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
   He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
    and born of the virgin Mary.
   He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, died, and was buried.
   He descended into hell.*
   On the third day he rose again.
   He ascended into heaven,
    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
   He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
   the holy catholic Church,
   the communion of saints,
   the forgiveness of sins,
   the resurrection of the body,
   and the life everlasting. Amen.

 Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

A: Let us pray. Merciful God,
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--

 our Lord.  Amen.

THE PRAYERS (stand, if you are able): WOV Page 34
A: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus,
 and for all people according to their needs.

Each portion of the prayers concludes with these words:

P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,
 trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER: (Stand if you are able) WOV Page 39
P:  Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
C: Our Father, who art in heaven,
   hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
   thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
  Give us this day our daily bread;
  and forgive us our trespasses,
   as we forgive those who trespass against us;
  and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
   forever and ever. Amen.

Quilt Ministry at St. John

When: Sunday, October 11, 2009
Who:  Anyone who can tie a knot, women, men and teens
Where:  Down in the sewing room at St. John Lutheran Church
What to Expect:  Finish off quilts for the Cabrini Mission in Detroit.  Our goal is 200 by the first week of December.  We are working with St. Cyril and St. Mark church and already have 50 completed.  These will be handed out with Christmas food baskets.  The Cabrini Mission is like our Samaritan House.  We will do some for children also.
Plan on laughing, fellowship, saying a prayer over a quilt, and knowing you are helping those less fortunate.  It’s a way to give back without opening your wallet.
What to Bring:  A gently used flat sheet, they will be used to back the quilts.
Regular quilting days at St. John are                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    first Wednesday of the month from 9am -12pm and the second Tuesday of the month from 9am-3pm.  Quilting day at St. Cyril (18 and Ryan) is the 4th Saturday of every month.
Come and have fun!

JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE
There are about 200 giving units in our church and if each unit gave an extra $10 each month at the end of the year we would have an additional $24,000.  Please consider a slight increase in your commitment to the ministry here at St. John and help solve our financial problem.

develop into a Sermon Series for this fall?  If you do then tell Pastor or call the church office.

The Sharing Tree in July?
Yes, the Sharing Tree is up!  This is to help us “stock the church” for MCREST.  Some tags are for food items, some for the Health Care kits that each guest receives from us, and some are for Birthday gifts and Bingo prizes.  The white envelopes are for donations for perishable items.  Please consider taking a tag or two.  We ask that you place items under the tree by August 23rd.  Please place the envelope in the collection basket by August 23rd.  Thank you!
