C: And also with you.

C: God of hope, lead all who are vulnerable to places of sanctuary where life may be sustained and hope may be found.  Bind us together in love as a community of your people, and make us bold to offer such restoration.  Amen.

PRAISE HYMN:                Open the Eyes of My Heart

2x Open the eyes of my heart Lord.  Open the eyes of my heart.
I want to see You.  I want to see You.

Open the eyes of my heart Lord.  Open the eyes of my heart.
I want to see You.  I want to see You.

To see You high and lifted up,
Shining in the light of Your glory.
Pour out your power and love, as we sing holy, holy, holy.

2nd ending High and lifted up, shining in the light of Your glory.
Pour out your power and love as we sing, holy, holy, holy.

Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy.  I want to see You.
Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy.  I want to see You.

I want to see You.  I want to see You.  I want to see You.

FIRST READING:  Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17
1One day Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, should I not try to find a home for you, where you will be well provided for?  2Is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been, a kinsman of ours? Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor.  3Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don't let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.  4When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do."  5"I will do whatever you say," Ruth answered.  13So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. Then he went to her, and the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.  14The women said to Naomi: "Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel!  15He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth."  16Then Naomi took the child, laid him in her lap and cared for him.  17The women living there said, "Naomi has a son." And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Psalm 127
1     Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches
over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
2     In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for he grants sleep
       to those he loves.
3     Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.
4     Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.
5     Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when
they contend with their enemies in the gate.

Second Reading:  Hebrews 1:1-4
1In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.  3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.  4So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able):     WOV No. 613
C:                                      Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!
    Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 12th Chapter
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:  Mark 12:35-40
35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ is the son of David?  36David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."'  37David himself calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?" The large crowd listened to him with delight.  38As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplaces, 39and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.  40They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely."

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:                                  “Risk and Restoration”                     Pastor Mark Evans

OFFERING/OFFERTORY (stand and sing): WOV Page 35
C: Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing.
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the  bread of life.
Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer now.
Grace our table with your presence, Lord, and give us a foretaste of the feast to  come.
A: Let us pray. Merciful God
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--
ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.
Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ
 our Lord.  Amen.

After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together:

PRAYER SONG:              Sweet Hour of Prayer

Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer that calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne – make all my wants and wishes known.

In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare, by thy return, sweet hour of prayer.

THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34
A: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people  according to their needs.

Each portion of the prayers concludes with these words:
  A: Lord, in your mercy,
  C: hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with these words:
P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,
trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.

CONFESSION:
P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the aid of your people, turning us from
our sin to live for you alone.  Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that, attentive to
your Word, we may confess our sins, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the
fullness of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
 Gracious God,
C: Have mercy on us.  In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things done and left undone.  Uphold us by your Spirit so that we
may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your holy
name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

PARDON:
P: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus
Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you
 in eternal life.
C: Amen.

GREAT THANKSGIVING: WOV Page 36
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places
offer thanks . . . (Here the minister continues with the proper preface,  concluding:) we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Congregation sings:
C:                   Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna.  Hosanna.  Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

P:  In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you.   Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink,
saying:  This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all
people for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this for the remembrance of me.

so much!

Future Sermon Series for January 2009

Pastor Mark could use your help with an idea for a future sermon series.  Here’s a question he would like to expand into a three or four part sermon series. Can any good come out of these troubled times?

Where is hope to be found in these troubled times?  PM has some ideas; how about you?

We invite Pre-school thru 5th Grade children to join us!  Kids of the Kingdom (KOK Kids) meet after 8:30 service from 9:45-10:20am upstairs in the room next to the library and then the children go down to Sunday School.  Any questions or concerns, please contact Marlene (248-651-7394) or Karen (586-752-7734).  We practice 3 times a month and usually sing once a month at the 10:30 service.

Stephen Ministry
Sometimes it’s hard to ask for help.
We’re brought up to be strong, self-sufficient, independent people.  We tend to think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of weakness.  So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside.  However, that’s not God’s plan.  Galatians 6:2 says “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”  God wants us to care for others – and allow others to care for us in our time of need.
If you’re sad or struggling inside, don’t suffer alone.  Ask for help.  We’ve got a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and help you through a tough time.  (It’s confidential, too!)  Find out more about Stephen Ministry by talking with one of our Stephen Leaders, Pastor Mark or call the church office for a confidential return call.  Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!
