CALL TO WORSHIP
Pastor Mark:  Prepare for the Messiah, a Savior who is Christ the King.
Prepare your hearts to love the child in the manger.  Prepare to welcome
the Lord, the Light of the World, sent to save us.  Look forward to this
Son created by a God who is merciful and mighty, who frees us from all our
                       sins.
All:  Prepare the way of the Lord!

OPENING SONG:  Prepare Ye The Way of The Lord

3x  Prepare Ye the way of the Lord, Prepare Ye the way of the Lord!
Prepare Ye the way of the Lord, Prepare Ye the way of the Lord!

Prayer of the Day:
All:   Show us the way, O God, to prepare our lives to reflect your reign of justice and peace.  Open our hearts to rejoice in renewed relationships, and send your Spirit to help us find direction and purpose in all that each day brings.  Amen.

Children’s Sermon                   Pastor Mark

Key Text: Luke 3:7-18
7John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?  8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.  9The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."  10"What should we do then?" the crowd asked.  11John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same."  12Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?"  13"Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them.  14Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay."  15The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ.  16John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.  17His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."  18And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them.

Children may leave for Sunday School at this time.

PRAYER RESPONSE           Love Through Me

Love through me, love through me, Oh Lord, love through me,
Somewhere, somebody needs your love tonight, Oh Lord love through me.

Speak through me, speak through me, Oh Lord, speak through me,
Make your word upon my lips a flame today, Oh Lord speak through me.

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Your mercy through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
All:  Amen

OFFERING………………Still A Bach Christmas..............Hilary Beyerlein violinist

Prayer of Approach and Confession
P: Still our hearts Lord as we look forward to the coming of Christ.  God of wonder,
A: Come to us.
P: Sometimes we think that whatever we want must be God’s will, and we close ourselves to God’s plans.  God of patience,
A: Come to us.
P: Sometimes we think that God can only be found in certain places, or in certain ways. God of no limits,
A: Come to us.
P: Sometimes we cannot believe the things that are asked of us, and assume we must be  misunderstanding.  God of surprises,
A: Come to us.
P:         Sometimes we are lost in our own selfish ways and lose sight of the joy in Jesus’ coming.  God of joy,
A: Come to us!   Amen.

THE LORD’S TABLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER
P:  Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray:
All:                                        Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us
our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever.  Amen

COMMUNION SONGS

Closer Still    Words and music by Geron Davis
Chorus 2x Closer to You, Lord, in Your perfect will.
Closer to You, Lord
Draw me closer still.

Verse  In the shadow of Your mighty hand,
Lord, I long to abide.  Not my will, but Lord, Your will be done.
Draw me closer to Your side.
It’s where I wanna be, nearer my God to Thee.

REPEAT ABOVE

Closer to You, Lord, in Your perfect will.
Closer to You, Lord
Draw me closer still.

Verse/Solo Nearer, nearer blessed Lord, to the cross where Thou hast died.
                        Draw me…

Closer to You, Lord, in Your perfect will.
Closer to You, Lord.  Draw me closer still.
Closer to You, Lord.  Draw me closer still.
Draw me closer still.  Draw me closer still.  Draw me closer still.

Shine Jesus Shine

Chorus Shine Jesus Shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory,
Blaze, Spirit, Blaze, set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river flow, flood the nations with love and mercy,
Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light.

Lord, the light of Your love is shining, in the midst of the darkness, shining;
Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us,
Set us free by the truth you now bring us.  Shine on me, shine on me;

Chorus

As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness,
Ever changing from glory to glory, mirrored here, may our lives tell your story.
Shine on me, shine on me;

Chorus

Pass It On

It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing.
That’s how it is with God’s love, once you’ve experienced it.
You spread His love to everyone.  You want to pass it on.

What a wondrous time is spring when all the trees are budding,
The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming.
That’s how it is with God’s love, once you’ve experienced it.
You want to sing, it’s fresh like spring.
You want to pass it on.

I wish for you my friend the happiness that I’ve found.
You can depend on Him, it matters not where you’re bound.
I’ll shout it from the mountain top, I want the world to know.
The Lord of Love, has come to me.  I want to pass it on.

Christ Child’s Lullaby
My love my treasured one are you. My sweet and lovely son are you.
You are my love my darling new.
Unworthy I of you.

Chorus  Al-le-lu-ia, Al-le-lu-ia, Al-le-lu-ia, Al-le-lu-ia.

Your mild and gentle eyes proclaim the loving heart with which you came.
A tender helpless tiny babe with boundless gifts of grace.

Chorus

King of kings, Most Holy One, God the Son, Eternal One.
You are my God and helpless son, High Ruler of Mankind
Chorus 2x

BENEDICTION
May God fill you with joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Believe this good news.  Open your hearts to the coming Savior, our Light of the World.  Look forward.  Rejoice and shine.  In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  Amen.

CLOSING SONG                Light of the World                                  Cathy Pino

You are the light of the world.  You are the light of the World,
So, shine, shine, shine, where you are.  You are the light of the world.

You are a city on a hill.  You are a city on a hill.
So, shine, shine, shine, where you are.  You are a city on a hill.

You are a candle in the dark.  You are a candle in the dark.
So, shine, shine, shine, where you are.  You are a candle in the dark.

You are a star in the night.  You are a star in the night.
So, shine, shine, shine, where you are.  You are a star in the night.

Pastor Mark could use your help with an idea for a future sermon series.  Here’s a question he would like to expand into a three or four part sermon series. Can any good come out of these troubled times?

Where is hope to be found in these troubled times?  PM has some ideas; how about you?
