CHILDREN’S SERMON        Pastor Mark
PRAISE HYMN:                       “Shine, Jesus, Shine”   WOV No. 651

BAPTISM:  (No photographs, please, until after worship.  The service of Baptism is an opportunity for all of us to remember our Baptisms.)
P:   Dear Parents and Sponsors, you have brought Douglas Mitchell Grishkevich to this place because God wants him to be washed and cleansed.  Through sin, we live in a broken world, but in baptism, by water and the spirit, we are reborn children of God and made members of Christ’s Body.

S:   We present Douglas to be washed in God’s Baptismal water.

P:   As parents and sponsors, you are now asked to see that this child grows up in the Christian Faith.  That he learns the stories of our Faith.  See to it that through your lives he understands the meaning of the Creeds, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. Make sure that he experiences the love of Christ through your love, for it is Christ’s love which shall sustain him throughout his life.  Will you keep these promises?
Parents & Sponsors:   We will.

P:   Together, with this Congregation of Believers, will you affirm your faith and the Faith into which Douglas is baptized?

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH:  (congregation together)
God is love, and in God is the source of all goodness and truth.  God is the creator of the universe and continues to recreate with us a kingdom of compassion for all humankind.  Jesus is God’s Son.  Jesus was born of Mary, lived a life of kindness and concern, died a cruel death on an executioner’s cross, and was raised on the third day to a new life.  Jesus’ life is our life.  We can now live a life of kindness and concern; we can die and be raised to new life; we can live as forgiven sinners, confident of our place in eternity.  We can respond to the call of Christ to follow him.
The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God, alive and at work, establishing and building the realm of God on this earth.  The Spirit of God leads us into the true faith, guides us through the difficult choices of life, and comforts us when we feel as if we cannot go on.  God is with us, living inside of us, through the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

THE BAPTISM:  Douglas Mitchell Grishkevich, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  Amen

BAPTISMAL PRAYER

P:   Douglas Mitchell Grishkevich, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the Cross of Christ forever.

A:   Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

CONGREGATIONAL WELCOME:    We welcome you into the Lord’s family.  We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, and worker with us in the kingdom of God.

 Today we welcome Douglas Mitchell Grishkevich  into our family of Christ. Douglas is the son of Nicol (Niemczura) and Paul Grishkevich of New Haven.  Douglas’ sponsors are Holly and Amy Kaiser
.

THE WORD OF GOD:  First Lesson:  Jeremiah 31:7-14
7This is what the LORD says: "Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, 'O LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.'  8See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return.  9They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel's father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.  10"Hear the word of the LORD, O nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands: 'He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.'  11For the LORD will ransom Jacob and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.  12They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty of the LORD-- the grain, the new wine and the oil, the young of the flocks and herds. They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will sorrow no more.  13Then maidens will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.  14I will satisfy the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty," declares the LORD.

Psalm 147:12-20
12     Extol the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion,
13     for he strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you.
14     He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.
15     He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly.
16     He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes.
17     He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?
18     He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.
19     He has revealed his word to Jacob, his laws and decrees to Israel.
20     He has done this for no other nation; they do not know his laws. Praise the LORD.

Second Lesson:  Ephesians 1:3-14
3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.  4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will--6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.  7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.  9And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment--to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.  11In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.  13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand): WOV No. 613
C:
Celtic Alleluia

                                            Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!
         Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, beginning in the 1st Chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

Gospel Lesson:  John 1:1-18
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2He was with God in the beginning.  3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.  5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.  6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.  7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.  8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.  9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.  10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--13children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.  14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'"  16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.  17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:................................”Close to God’s Heart” ..................Pastor Mark Evans

APOSTLES' CREED (stand, if you are able): WOV Page 33
C:  I believe in God, the Father almighty,
   Creator of heaven and earth.

and born of the virgin Mary.
   He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
   He descended into hell.*
On the third day he rose again.
   He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
   the holy catholic Church,
   the communion of saints,
   the forgiveness of sins,
   the resurrection of the body,
   and the life everlasting. Amen.

Do you enjoy knitting and crocheting but not sure if you need another afghan?  Many others can benefit from your expertise.  The ladies have an excess of yarn if you are interested in donating your time and talents to make lap robes or baby items for those in need.  Please contact Leona Thorman at 810.798.8532 for further details.
