CHILDREN’S SERMON        Pastor Mark

PRAISE HYMN:                       “Shine, Jesus, Shine”   WOV No. 651

THE WORD OF GOD:  First Lesson:  Genesis 37:1-11.”
1Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.  2This is the account of Jacob. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.  3Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him.  4When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.  5Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.  6He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had:  7We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it."  8His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.  9Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."  10When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?"  11His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Psalm 131

1     My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with
       great matters or things too wonderful for me.

2     But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like
       a weaned child is my soul within me.

3     O Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.

Second Lesson:  Genesis 45:12-15.”
12"You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is really I who am speaking to you.  13Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly."  14Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping.  15And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand): WOV No. 613
C:
Celtic Alleluia

                                            Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!
         Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning in the 14th Chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

Gospel Lesson:  Luke 14:7-11
7When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable:  8"When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.  9If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, 'Give this man your seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.  10But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests.  11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:................................”Humiliation is Good for Us!” ..............Pastor Mark Evans

APOSTLES' CREED (stand, if you are able): WOV Page 33
C:  I believe in God, the Father almighty,
   Creator of heaven and earth.
  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
   He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
    and born of the virgin Mary.
   He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, died, and was buried.
   He descended into hell.*
   On the third day he rose again.
   He ascended into heaven,
    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
   He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
   the holy catholic Church,
   the communion of saints,
   the forgiveness of sins,
   the resurrection of the body,
   and the life everlasting. Amen.

 OFFERING/OFFERTORY: (Stand, if you are able, and sing)…………. LBW 565
C: Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
 Praise Him, all creatures here below;
 Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
 Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

A: Let us pray. Merciful God,
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--
 ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.
 Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ
 our Lord.  Amen.

Haiti Earthquake Relief
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
On Tuesday a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the island country of Haiti.        Offices, hotels, houses and shops have collapsed. The presidential palace is in ruins and many churches have been destroyed. Hospitals are overflowing and the search for survivors is intense.    The streets of Haiti are filled with people in shock and searching for loved ones among the rubble.  Your help is needed today to bring immediate relief and continued hope for our brothers and sisters in Haiti. About 3 million lives, one-third of Haiti’s population, are affected by this earthquake.    Already one of the poorest countries in the world (70 percent of Haiti's population lives in extreme poverty), this catastrophe will exacerbate the suffering felt by many already living with hunger and poverty.   ELCA Disaster Response is already working through long-standing partnerships on the ground to provide emergency food, water, shelter and medical supplies.              Financial gifts are urgently needed. Your gifts to ELCA International Disaster Response, designated for Haiti Earthquake Relief, will be used entirely (100 percent) for immediate relief and ongoing recovery in Haiti. Your prayers and generous gifts will make a life-saving difference. Please give today at www.elca.org/haitiearthquake
