HYMN OF PRAISE: WOV Page 29
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father,
we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
PRAYER OF THE DAY: WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: God of justice, forgive our tendency to the self-centered planting of seeds of deceit and strife. Make us bold to speak and act against all injustice with courage and conviction, trusting in your bountiful mercy, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
THE WORD OF GOD: Micah 3:1-5
1Then I said, "Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel. Should you not know justice, 2you who hate good and love evil; who tear the skin from my people and the flesh from their bones; 3who eat my people's flesh, strip off their skin and break their bones in pieces; who chop them up like meat for the pan, like flesh for the pot?" 4Then they will cry out to the LORD, but he will not answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them because of the evil they have done. 5This is what the LORD says: "As for the prophets who lead my people astray, if one feeds them, they proclaim 'peace'; if he does not, they prepare to wage war against him.
Psalm 5:1-8
1 Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing.
2 Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.
3 In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests
before you and wait in expectation.
4 You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you the wicked cannot
dwell.
5 The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.
6 You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD
abhors.
7 But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house; in reverence will I bow
down toward your holy temple.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies—
make straight your way before me.
SECOND LESSON: Galatians 2:15-21
15"We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' 16know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified. 17"If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! 18If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker. 19For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able): WOV No. 612
C: Celtic Alleluia:
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 7th Chapter
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 7:36-50
36Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. 37When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. 39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is--that she is a sinner." 40Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. 41"Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?" 43Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said. 44Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." 48Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON: “Choose Justice” Pastor Mark Evans
PRAISE HYMN: This Is The Day
This is the day, this is the day, that the Lord has made, that the Lord has made;
We will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day, that the Lord has made.
This is the day, this is the day, when he rose again, when he rose again,
We will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day that he rose again, we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day when he rose a-gain.
This is the day, this is the day, when the Spirit came; when the Spirit came.
We will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day when the Spirit came, we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day, when the Spir-it came.
OFFERING/OFFERTORY (stand and sing): WOV Page 35
C: Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
A: Let us pray. Merciful God
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--
ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.
Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together,
Bind Us Together
Bind us together, Lord, bind us together with cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together Lord, bind us together, bind us together with love.
There is only one God. There is only one King.
There is only one body. That is why we sing.
Bind us together, Lord, bind us together with cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together Lord, bind us together, bind us together with love.
THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34
A: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus,
and for all people according to their needs.
Each portion of the prayers concludes with these words:
A: Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
The prayers conclude with these words:
P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,
trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen
THE ORDER OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS:
P: Gracious God,
C: Our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo.
Forgive what our lips tremble to name; what our hearts can no longer bear,
and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a
past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed;
and grant us grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image;
through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON:
P: Jesus Christ our Savior gave himself for us, redeeming us from all sin and cleansing us to be people who are eager to do what is good. Through the water of rebirth and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, God saves us, renews us in grace and bestows on us eternal life.
C: Amen
GREAT THANKSGIVING: WOV Page 36
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places
offer thanks . . . (Here the minister continues with the proper preface, concluding:) we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Congregation sings
C: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for
you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
