THE WORD OF GOD:  2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-11
1When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.  2Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here; the LORD has sent me to Bethel." But Elisha said, "As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel.  6Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here; the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." And he replied, "As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So the two of them walked on.  7Fifty men of the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan.  8Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.  9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?" "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit," Elisha replied.  10"You have asked a difficult thing," Elijah said, "yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours--otherwise not."  11As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Psalm 77:11-20
11     I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of
         long ago.
12     I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.
13     Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God?
14     You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among
         the peoples.
15     With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and
         Joseph.
16     The waters saw you, O God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths
         were convulsed.
17     The clouds poured down water, the skies resounded with thunder; your arrows
         flashed back and forth.
18     Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the
         earth trembled and quaked.
19     Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your
         footprints were not seen.
20     You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

SECOND LESSON:  Galatians 5:1, 13-25
1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.  13You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.  14The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."  15If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.  16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.  17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.  18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.  19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.  24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.  25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able): WOV No. 612

C: Celtic Alleluia:

                                      Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

    Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 9th Chapter
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:   Luke 9:51-55
51As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.  52And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.  54When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"  55But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON:                                           “Turn or Burn!”                        Pastor Mark Evans

PRAISE HYMN:                                  This Is The Day

         This is the day, this is the day, that the Lord has made, that the Lord has made;
         We will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
         This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.
         This is the day, this is the day, that the Lord has made.

         This is the day, this is the day, when he rose again, when he rose again,
         We will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
         This is the day that he rose again, we will rejoice and be glad in it.
         This is the day, this is the day when he rose a-gain.

         This is the day, this is the day, when the Spirit came; when the Spirit came.
          We will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
          This is the day when the Spirit came, we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Bind us together, Lord, bind us together with cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together Lord, bind us together, bind us together with love.

There is only one God.  There is only one King.
There is only one body.  That is why we sing.

Bind us together Lord, bind us together, bind us together with love.

THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34

 Forgive what our lips tremble to name; what our hearts can no longer bear,
 and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a
 past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed;
 and grant us grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image;
 through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON:
P: Jesus Christ our Savior gave himself  for us, redeeming us from all sin and  cleansing us to be people who are eager to do what is good. Through the water of rebirth and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, God saves us, renews us in grace and  bestows on us eternal life.
C: Amen

  heaven and earth are full of your glory.

    Hosanna in the highest.

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
       broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Take and eat; this is my body, given for
       you.   Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:  This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this for the remembrance of me.
