C: Christ, have mercy.
P: Kyrie eleison:
C: Lord, have mercy.
HYMN OF PRAISE: WOV Page 29
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father,
we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
PRAYER OF THE DAY: WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: Lord, help us to understand that prayer is not a grocery list of wants that we hand to you, and when we don’t get what we want that does not mean that our prayers didn’t work. Rather, help us to see that our prayers to you are an outpouring of the everyday experiences of living in relationship with you in the wonder and mystery of your grace and love. Amen.
THE WORD OF GOD: Jeremiah 29:11-14
11For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile."
Psalm 88:1-9
1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you.
2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.
3 For my soul is full of trouble and my life draws near the grave.
4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like a man without
strength.
5 I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember
no more, who are cut off from your care.
6 You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.
8 You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them.
I am confined and cannot escape;
9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands
to you.
SECOND LESSON: Philippians 4:4-7
4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able): WOV No. 612
C: Celtic Alleluia:
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 11th Chapter
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 11:1-13
1One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." 2He said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread. 4Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.'" 5Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' 7"Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' 8I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. 9"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11"Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON: “Shaped by Prayer” Pastor Mark Evans

A: Let us pray. Merciful God

Announcements and Recognition of Visitors
People Concerns for the Week Pastor Mark
After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together,
Healer
You are my healer, You are my shelter from myself;
You’re my deliverer, You love me back to life each time I fail.
You’re my desire, You’re all that fills my hungry need;
You draw me higher, You know my heart and yet You still love me.
THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34
A: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus,
and for all people according to their needs.
Each portion of the prayers concludes with these words:
A: Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
The prayers conclude with these words:
P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,
trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen
THE ORDER OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS:
P: Gracious God,
C: Our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo.
Forgive what our lips tremble to name; what our hearts can no longer bear,
and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a
past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed;
and grant us grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image;
through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON:
P: Jesus Christ our Savior gave himself for us, redeeming us from all sin and cleansing us to be people who are eager to do what is good. Through the water of rebirth and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, God saves us, renews us in grace and bestows on us eternal life.
C: Amen
GREAT THANKSGIVING: WOV Page 36
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places
offer thanks . . . (Here the minister continues with the proper preface, concluding:) we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Congregation sings
C: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for
you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Interested in reading one of the book club books but think that you have to join the computer blog to take part? Read anyway! If you’re not computer savvy, or are just not interested in blogging as a form of communication, we still want you to be involved. Pick up a copy of something that interests you and don’t worry about anything other than your own enjoyment of the book. Also, if you like one of the authors you’re reading, look around at the shelves in the book nook. There are other books by most of the authors chosen. We’ve also added other books (such as the Joshua Series and the Father Tim Series) to the area for your easy reach and enjoyment.

“BE THE CHURCH” returns on October 9-10, 2010. Be ready for more information to follow.
