ENTRANCE HYMN (stand, if you are able):
                                                                     “Living for Jesus”

Living for Jesus a life that is true, Striving to please Him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad hearted and free, This is the pathway of blessing for me.
Chorus:
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee;
For You in death and dying, Did give Yourself for me.
I own no other Master, My heart shall be Thy throne.
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.

Living for Jesus through earth's little while,
My dearest treasure, the light of His smile;
Seeking the lost ones He died to redeem,
Bringing the weary to find rest in Him.
Chorus

HYMN OF PRAISE: WOV Page 29
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father,

we worship You, we give You thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest;
glory to God, glory to God, and peace to God’s people on earth.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: Lord, sometimes it’s just so hard to have faith.  We like to know the end of the story.  We want everything instantly.  Waiting for anything seems out of the question.  Lord, this day help us to see that faith is a journey in which we walk hand in hand with You facing together the unknown.  Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD:  Isaiah 1:1, 10-13, 18-20
1The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.  10Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah!  11"The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.  12When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?  13Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies.  18"Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.  19If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; 20but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Psalm 50:1-11, 14-15
1       The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising
         of the sun to the place where it sets.
2       From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.
3       Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him
         a tempest rages.
4       He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people:
5       "Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by
         sacrifice."
6       And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge.
7       "Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you:
         I am God, your God.
8       I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, which are
         ever before me.
9       I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens,
10     for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11     I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine.
14     Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High,
15     and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

SECOND LESSON:  Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16
1Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.  2This is what the ancients were commended for.  3By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.  8By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.  9By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.  10For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.  11By faith Abraham, even though he was past age--and Sarah herself was barren--was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise.  12And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.  13All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.  14People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.  15If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.  16Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand, if you are able): WOV No. 612

C: Celtic Alleluia:
                                      Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

    Al – le – lu – ia,  al – le – lu – ia!

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 12th Chapter
C: Glory to you, O Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL:   Luke 12:35-40
35"Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.  37It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.  38It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.  39But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.  40You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.

Little ones to Him belong.  They are weak but He is strong.

Refrain    Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me, He who died, heaven’s gate to open wide.
He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in.

Refrain

Jesus loves me, this I know, as He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee, saying, “Let them come to me.”

Refrain

Announcements and Recognition of Visitors
People Concerns for the Week Pastor Mark

After the updates of the People Concerns, the Congregation will stand and sing together,

In Moments Like These

In moments like these I sing out a song,
I sing out a love song to Jesus.
In moments like these I lift up my hands,
I lift up my hands to the Lord.

Singing, ‘I love you, Lord.’  Singing, ‘I love you, Lord.’
Singing, ‘I love you, Lord, I love you.’

THE PRAYERS (stand): WOV Page 34
A: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus,
 and for all people according to their needs.

Each portion of the prayers concludes with these words:
A: Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude with these words:
P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,
 trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen

THE ORDER OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS:
P: Gracious God,
C: Our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo.
 Forgive what our lips tremble to name; what our hearts can no longer bear,
 and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a
 past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed;
 and grant us grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image;
 through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON:
P: Jesus Christ our Savior gave himself  for us, redeeming us from all sin and  cleansing us to be people who are eager to do what is good. Through the water of rebirth and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, God saves us, renews us in grace and  bestows on us eternal life.
C: Amen

GREAT THANKSGIVING: WOV Page 36
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places
 offer thanks . . . (Here the minister continues with the proper preface,  concluding:) we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Congregation sings
C: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
  heaven and earth are full of your glory.
                                Hosanna.  Hosanna.  Hosanna in the highest.
  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
    Hosanna in the highest.

P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
       broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:  Take and eat; this is my body, given for
       you.   Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:  This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.  Do this for the remembrance of me.

DAY CAMP AND VBS
For the past week, St. John hosted Day Camp and VBS for children ages 3-12.  Close to 60 kids attended this 5-day event.  Counselors from Living Waters helped make it a huge success.  The week was filled with music, crafts, Bible study, nature and games.  Everyone had a great time.  Of course this event cannot be a success without the help of such a supportive congregation.  A huge THANK YOU! goes out to Don and Sue Schwartz and Paul and Diane Neihaus for hosting the four counselors from Living Waters.  Opening up your home and welcoming complete strangers is certainly God's Work at it's very best.  Also, thanks to the Hauptli family, the Evans family and the Rohloff family for providing dinner for the counselors during their stay.  To everyone who donated items for the week to help provide snacks for the children, your thoughtfulness and generosity is, as always, greatly appreciated. All of our junior counselors who encourage and lead our young children, Hannah Hunt, Chris Kanczuga, Christopher (Kit) Sittenauer, David Romska, Hunter Long, Nick Howard, Tristan Finn, Chase Finn, and Kristen Stofflet.   Last and not least all of the people who freely volunteer their time and talents, Joan Stofflet, Karen Palmer, Brenda Palmer, Darcy Mackenzie, Amy Hunt and Pastor Mark--the week could not happen without your great gift of time.

Interested in reading one of the book club books but think that you have to join the computer blog to take part?  Read anyway!  If you’re not computer savvy, or are just not interested in blogging as a form of communication, we still want you to be involved.  Pick up a copy of something that interests you and don’t worry about anything other than your own enjoyment of the book.  Also, if you like one of the authors you’re reading, look around at the shelves in the book nook.  There are other books by most of the authors chosen.  We’ve also added other books (such as the Joshua Series and the Father Tim Series) to the area for your easy reach and enjoyment.
