PRAYER OF THE DAY:………………………………………………………… WOV Page 30
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray…
C: Lord, in this fast-paced, anything-goes culture, we have terribly short memories. Through the example of Jesus and the power of Your Holy Spirit, remind us of the things that please You. Amen.
THE WORD OF GOD: First Lesson: Jeremiah 2:4-8
4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, all you clans of the house of Israel.
5This is what the LORD says: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. 6They did not ask, 'Where is the LORD, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and rifts, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?' 7I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable. 8The priests did not ask, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.
Psalm 81:1, 10-16
1 Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.
11 "But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me.
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.
13 "If my people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways,
14 how quickly would I subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes!
15 Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever.
16 But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you."
Second Lesson: Hebrews 13:1-8
1Keep on loving each other as brothers. 2Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. 3Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. 4Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. 5Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." 6So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" 7Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (stand): WOV No. 613
C:
Celtic Alleluia
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
Al – le – lu – ia, al – le – lu – ia!
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning in the 14th Chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
Gospel Lesson: Luke 14:12-14
12Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
SERMON:................................ ”Keep Remembering!”..........................Pastor Mark Evans
PRAISE HYMN: Jesus Loves Me
Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong. They are weak but He is strong.
Refrain Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me, He who died, heaven’s gate to open wide.
He will wash away my sin, let His little child come in.
Refrain
Jesus loves me, this I know, as He loved so long ago,
Taking children on His knee, saying, “Let them come to me.”
Refrain
APOSTLES' CREED (stand, if you are able): WOV Page 33
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.*
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
OFFERING/OFFERTORY: (Stand, if you are able, and sing)…………. LBW 565
C: Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
A: Let us pray. Merciful God,
C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us--
ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love.
Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
